Flying Planes And Helping Others

Matt began flying in 1993 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. While undergoing chemotherapy and living in Washington, D.C., an individual recommended that he take flying lessons. The closest flight school was at Dulles International Airport where Matt learned to fly alongside 747s and the Concorde.

In 1994, Matt moved to Columbia, South Carolina, to begin law school. That same year, Matt finished his training and earned his private pilot certificate.

Today Matt uses his flying capabilities for work and community needs. He is an instrument-rated pilot, and he has accumulated more than 1,400 hours of flying time. Since 2008 Matt has accepted three to four Angel Flight ‘missions’ a year. Angel Flight is a nonprofit organization out of Atlanta, Georgia, that provides free air transportation to individuals with any legitimate charitable or medically related need.

Matt’s unique story and experiences in aviation have led to a number of articles, including feature stories in City People, a publication of The Greenville News, and the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA ePilot) journal.

In 2012, South Carolina’s General Assembly elected Matt as a member of the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission for the 4th Congressional District. In that role, Matt participated in the implementation of statewide policy regarding the SC aviation system, which includes 60 airports and state-owned aircraft.

Thank you so much for flying Eva and Dallas to the burn center in Augusta, GA. They absolutely loved the adventure. It was her first airplane ride and she has talked about it every day! You helped us so much and we thank you with all of our hearts.”
